Permanent Funds, Permanent Burden: Why Prop 1 Fails Texans

Posted by · September 08, 2025

This November, Texans will be asked to vote on Proposition 1, adopted in the Texas Legislature as SJR 59, a constitutional amendment creating two permanent funds to finance capital projects and equipment for the Texas State Technical College System. While framed as “support for workforce education,” this measure entrenches yet another taxpayer-funded bureaucracy.

The Libertarian Party of Texas opposes Proposition 1 because it expands government spending and control instead of reducing it. Our platform is clear: “taxes are inherently oppressive and destined to be misused and misappropriated. LPTexas calls for an end to all taxation. Where taxes cannot be eliminated, they should be minimized or replaced with user fees.”

Proposition 1 creates a permanent pipeline of tax dollars and government-managed investments to fund buildings, land, equipment, and even debt payments for a state-run school system. This is not a one-time expense, it’s a perpetual obligation on taxpayers. Worse, it prioritizes one favored institution while leaving individuals and local communities with no say in how their money is used.

Education is important, but it is not the role of government to seize wealth and redistribute it to fund specific programs. Private institutions, voluntary associations, and industry partnerships are better equipped to provide innovative and responsive workforce education without the inefficiencies and coercion of state control.

Texans deserve freedom, not more permanent funds, bureaucratic spending, and constitutional entrenchment of government overreach. On November 4, vote NO on Proposition 1. Let’s keep moving toward liberty, lower taxes, and a truly voluntary society.
